MADISON, Wis. -

Wisconsin Department of Corrections Secretary Gary Hamblin is retiring, citing family health concerns.

A statement from Hamblin said it was a difficult decision to leave the Department of Corrections but that he needs to spend more time with his family as he and his wife continue to address individual health issues.

A statement from Gov. Scott Walker’s office announced the retirement Friday morning and thanked Hamblin for 45 years of public service.

Hamblin spent 29 years with the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation investigating organized crime, white collar crime, public corruption and homicides.  He also served as the division's administrative officer, the director of the Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Bureau and the Gaming Enforcement Bureau, and the deputy administrator of the Division of Narcotics Enforcement.

Hamblin was Dane County sheriff from 1997 to 2007 and was the administrator of the Division of Law Enforcement Services at the Wisconsin Department of Justice until he was appointed Department of Commerce secretary by Gov. Walker.

Hamblin's retirement is effective Oct. 26.
