Cities take water usage precautions

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. -

The heat hasn't caused any cities in Dane County to issue water restrictions, yet, but many cities are taking precautions.

Sun Prairie's Water Utility manager, Rick Wicklund, said last week the city sold five million gallons of water, which surpasses last year's highest sale by about a million gallons.

"You can tell everybody is watering," Wicklund said. "So, what we're trying to issue through the (Sun Prairie) Star, we're asking people to water early in the morning or later in the evening so it kind of shaves our peak demand early in the afternoon."

Water use in the city is up 25 percent from last year's peak.

But Wicklund said the city is in OK shape because it's not using all of their water wells.

Fitchburg does not seem to be doing as well with their water usage.

Depending on the amounts used this weekend, Mayor Shawn Pfaff said he may need to issue a warning.

The city already registered 2.8 million gallons of water used.

If that number exceeds 3.4 million, Pfaff said he will ask for voluntary monitoring.

"Then I, as mayor, will issue a voluntary warning where we'll ask people to maybe do alternate sides of the street to do watering; watch their watering, if you will," he said.

If the number of gallons of water used reaches the high end of three million, Pfaff said he may issue a mandatory restriction.
