JANESVILLE TOWNSHIP, Wis. -

The Rock County Sheriff’s Office is trying to find a man who a witness saw walking on foot in bitterly cold temperatures Monday night.

Deputies were called to the intersection of North Little Road and County Road A in Janesville Township at 8:26 p.m. for a report of a man walking and stumbling on County Road A.

The temperature at the time was 2 degrees and the wind chill was -14.

The passerby said the man was white, in his late 40s to late 50s, about 6 feet tall and weighing 220 to 230 pounds with dark or gray facial hair. He was wearing a tan-colored coat and dark pants and had difficulty keeping his balance while walking.

He was last seen at 8:28 p.m. walking across a field.

A search started a few minutes later. Janesville police assisted deputies with a K-9 and also used a thermal imaging device. The DNR canvassed the area with a thermal imaging-equipped airplane.

The search ended at 4:24 a.m.

Anyone with information to help determine the well-being of the man is asked to call 608-757-2244.

  • PHOTOS: Madison store helps collect hundreds of Teddy bears for police

MADISON, Wis.--A west Madison store is part of an effort to collect hundreds of stuffed animals to donate to six police departments in Southern Wisconsin.

Todd Merryfield, owner of The Learning Shop at 714 S. Gammon Road, said the store is collecting the bears for officers who use them to help comfort children with whom police come in contact.

"This is a great way to support what (police) do," Merryfield said. "Those are the kids that need something like this to reassure them, calm them down, and let them know that things are all right."

Nearly 500 plush animals were donated Tuesday, a Learning Shop spokeswoman said. The Madison store's effort is part of a larger initiative through the Bears for Humanity organization.
