300,000 gallons of manure leaked from digester

Published On: Dec 24 2013 05:23:56 PM CST   Updated On: Dec 03 2013 09:07:18 AM CST

A ruptured pipe resulted in the spilling of 300,000 gallons of manure from the Dane Community Digester north of Waunakee, according to a release from the digester operators.

The release states that employees discovered a ruptured pipe on Nov. 24 and the leak was stopped immediately. Clear Horizons employees installed barrier berms to help confine the spill to the site and facilitate the cleanup. Subcontractors were also brought in to assist with the cleanup.

The spill flowed southeast into Six Mile Creek in Waunakee.

Mark Cain, a state Department of Natural Resources wastewater engineer, says it's not clear how much sewage reached the creek. He says no fish kills have been reported.

Cain says the company has been cooperating with the cleanup, but if it's found to have violated its wastewater permit, it could be fined up to $10,000 a day in addition to other penalties.

The spill is said to be nearly cleaned up.

The cause of the spill is under investigation.
