Madison police said two friends were beaten by the same person as they walked near the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus early Saturday morning.

Police said the victims, a 20-year-old Madison man and a 20-year-old Monroe man, reported the attacks around 2:20 a.m. but said the attacks actually occurred an hour earlier.

One victim said he tried to ignore a group of four men who were on the sidewalk, yelling, in the 1700 block Madison Street.

As he passed, one of the men punched him in the head, and then kicked him in the head as he doubled over from the initial blow, according to a Madison Police Department incident report.

His friend, the second victim, was walking a bit behind him and came to the aid of his injured friend, police said.

Police said the man who attacked the first victim cracked a beer bottle over the head of the second victim. That victim was taken to a hospital to close gashes in his scalp.

The first victim suffered a black eye. Neither seemed to know any of the men who were on the sidewalk and said they did nothing to provoke the assaults, according to the incident report.

Police said the attacker was described as a black man, around 20 years old, standing 5 feet 10 inches and weighing about 175 pounds. Police said he was wearing a costume made to look like a used cigarette or "blunt."
