BELOIT, Wis. -

The Beloit Fire Department responded to a report of two people in the Turtle Creek below the Colley Road Bridge at 2:58 p.m. Tuesday, according to a release.

Two canoes were on the Turtle Creek when one canoe overturned in water that was filled with debris and the canoeists were not able to turn the canoe back over, according to the release.

Police and fire responders quickly gained access to the location from Colley and Stateline roads, according to the release.

The Beloit canoeist’s location was obtained through a cell tower locator and placed the stranded people about two-tenths of a mile from 1301 East Stateline Road in Turtle, according to the release.

Officials say Jessie Cahill, 21, and Lorrain Rutherford, 19, both of Beloit paddled to land and called for help.

Rescuers set up secondary catch lines at Broad Street Bridge and on Turtle Creek in South Beloit, according to the release.

Autumn Nelson, 18, and Levi Cahill, 18, were safely pulled from the water and refused transport to the hospital, according to the release.

Cahill and Rutherford were also unharmed and had guided rescuers to the scene.

The water rescue was accomplished by the Beloit Fire Department, Rock County 911 Communications Center, the South Beloit Fire Department, City of Beloit Police Department, Turtle Township Police and Fire departments, and Rock County Sheriff’s Department, according to the release.

Officials say Larry Cornellier, a South Beloit businessman, helped rescue the canoeists with ATVs and farm equipment.
