After white smoke rose from a chimney above the Sistine Chapel, Pope Francis I emerged onto the Vatican balcony as the new poniff of the Roman Catholic Church.
Francis, formerly known as Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, hails from Argentina and is the first pope from Latin America. Bergoglio is considered a straight-shooter who adheres to the church's most conservative wing. He is 76.
He was elected by the cardinals to replace Pope Benedict XVI who recently retired. Here's a list of the other candidates that were up for consideration.
