New reality TV show seeking creative Madison-area amateur chefs

Reality television is coming to Madison.

Thankfully, it's nothing along the lines of "Mendota Shore" or "Real Housewives: Dane County." Instead, Spike TV’s forthcoming "Frankenfood" show will pit amateur chefs against one another in a battle to decide who makes the best original dish. Madison is one of the show's eight featured cities, and producers are holding auditions Dec. 7 at the Sheraton Hotel. 

"We are looking for every age, every background," says Whitney Parshall of Sharp Entertainment, which is producing the show—whether you've been cooking all your life or just happen to have a killer meatball recipe. Those interested in auditioning are asked to fill out a questionnaire and bring a plate of their most interesting food concoction to the casting call—emphasis on interesting. A select group of culinary concoctions deemed worthy will get the chance to go on the show (filming is slated for early 2014). And what do the competitors receive for their efforts? If they are successful in wowing the judges, comprised of food experts, restaurant owners and chefs, the winner receives $10,000 and gets to see his or her plate on the menu of a to-be-determined local restaurant.

"Frankenfood" marks another notch in the belt of the Madison's food scene's recent run in with national attention. Just two months ago, Fox News named Madison a "top foodie paradise." Within days of that story, local places like Madison Sourdough, Fromagination, Karben4 and Underground Butcher were featured on an episode of the Food Network’s "Heartland Table." And around this time last year, the Wisconsin burger joint with a Madison location, AJ Bombers, was featured on the Discovery channel's "United States of Bacon." This recent spate of local food attention from national entities is no surprise to us, but it will nonetheless be interesting to see how well Madisonians fare in a competition over who can make the weirdest, tastiest food. So if you or someone you know has that bizarre family recipe that has no business tasting heavenly, but somehow manages to blow everyone away, head on over to the Sheraton Hotel between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Dec. 7 and contribute to Madison's gradual rise to national food fame.
