New Madison food-assistance program announced

MADISON, Wis. -

Local leaders and Madison Mayor Paul Soglin announced a new food-assistance program that will start Aug. 4, according to a release.

The MadMarket Double Dollars Program, a dollar-for-dollar matching program for the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program at local farmers’ markets, will run Aug. 4 thought the end of October, according to the release.

The program allows SNAP users to receive the double dollars by shopping at a participating market with their benefits card, according to the release. When the standard transaction is made, the participant will receive a dollar-for-dollar match, up to $30 per person, redeemable at any vendor at the participating market.

The four participating markets are the Northside Farmers’ Market, the Eastside Farmers’ Market at Wil-Mar, and two South Madison Farmers’ Markets, one at the Labor Temple and one at Villager Mall, according to the release.

Officials said the markets were selected based on their proximity to SNAP users, making the double dollars program accessible to those who need it the most.

The program will provide accessible and affordable healthy food, and put more dollars into the pockets of regional farmers, officials said.

The goal of Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin, Meriter Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital, UW Health, Community Action Coalition for South Central Wisconsin, Inc. and the city of Madison is to see the program grow over time, to attract more community partners, and to bring the program to every farmers’ market in Madison, according to the release.
