As we learn more about achievement gaps and success in school, preparing our kids for college or jobs in our communities, we learn more about the barriers to such success. A lot of kids have it real rough, dealing with health issues, family problems, poverty and more. It can be overwhelming.

For more than forty years, Youth Services of Southern Wisconsin has been providing services to these vulnerable kids, but the need has long out-stripped the resources available. So we celebrate – if that’s the right word – the grand opening Friday of Youth Services’ new headquarters on Rimrock Road. The building is twice as big as the current facility, near bus lines and bike paths, and it’ll house the agency’s Briarpatch Program, Youth Job Center, Project HUGS and more, including training space for 60 volunteers and an 8-bed shelter to serve runaway and homeless youth.

It’s a shame we need a place like this. But we do. And since Youth Services is so good at what it does, the new building will mean better care for kids who really need it. And that is worth celebrating.
