Rep. Paul Ryan

All but one Republican in Wisconsin's congressional delegation voted against a deal ending a government shutdown, while all Democrat members of the delegation voted in support.

Rep. Paul Ryan of Janesville said the deal voted on Wednesday was a missed opportunity.

"To pay our bills today -- and to make sure we can pay our bills tomorrow -- we must make a down payment on the debt. Today's legislation won't help us reduce our fast-growing debt," Ryan said in a release. "This isn't a breakthrough. We're just kicking the can down the road."

A release from Sen. Ron Johnson stated the legislation was fiscally irresponsible.

"President Obama and Harry Reid may claim a legislative victory, but they have proven, once again, they are more than willing to increase the debt burden on our children and grandchildren," Johnson said. "They're willing to do it without enacting any fiscal discipline or reforms to address America's long-term debt and deficit problem."

Rep. Reid Ribble was the only Republican to vote in favor of the bill.

Rep. Ron Kind said he's hopeful Republicans and his fellow Democrats can work on long term deficit reduction.

"The federal government can't keep skipping from crisis to crisis, causing self-inflicted wounds to the U.S. economy," he said in a release.

Rep. Mark Pocan said he hopes Congress can avoid a repeat of the stalemate of the last few weeks.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that the congressional deal also turns negotiations on a long-term budget agreement to a committee that Ryan is expected to co-chair.
