MADISON, Wis. -

Severe thunderstorms are still possible over the central Midwest, but the threat moves east of southern Wisconsin on Tuesday.

The Storm Prediction Center is predicting large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall as the main threats, although an isolated tornado can't be ruled out.

The atmosphere over southern Wisconsin was fairly stable during the day Monday as the thunderstorms that swept through the area Sunday night moved off to the east. But as humidity built Monday evening, and an upper-air disturbance moved northeastward from Missouri toward the region, thunderstorms developed Monday evening.

Additional strong to severe thunderstorms may develop on Tuesday ahead of an approaching cold front. The greatest severe weather threat area on Tuesday will be east of a line from Green Bay to Milwaukee. The severe weather threat should end with the passage of the cold front Tuesday night.

This is part of the same storm system that brought the devastating tornadoes to Oklahoma over the past few days. As of 5:45 PM, tornado watches extend from central Texas to central Illinois.
