Published On: May 08 2014 05:08:32 PM CDT

MADISON, Wis. -

District officials announced Thursday five new principals will start at Madison schools over the summer.

Elvehjem Elementary School, Falk Elementary School, Orchard Ridge Elementary School, O’Keeffe Middle School and Memorial High School will be getting new principals, officials said.

Sarah Larson will be the new principal at Elvehjem Elementary School. She has more than 10 years of experience in the field of education, and has served as a literacy instructional resource teacher with MMSD since 2012.

Grace Okoli will be the new principal at Falk Elementary School. She has served as the assistant principal at Stephens Elementary School in MMSD since 2013.

Becky Kundert will be the new principal at Orchard Ridge Elementary School. She has worked in MMSD since 2001, and has been the assistant principal for the past two years at Chavez Elementary School.

Tony Dugas will be the new principal at O’Keeffe Middle School. He has worked in education for 18 years, and has been the principal of Northside Elementary School in Sun Prairie since 2009.

Jay Affeldt will be the new principal at Memorial High School. He has been in the field of education for more than 15 years, is a graduate of Memorial High School, and has been part of the Memorial High School staff since 1999.

“We know our vision as a district doesn’t come to life without dynamic leaders in every school,” Madison Metropolitan School District Superintendent Jennifer Cheatham said in a release. “We couldn’t be more excited to welcome these outstanding principals to our leadership team.”

This year, MMSD launched a more rigorous process based on an external review of the districts recruitment, hiring and induction processes, according to the release. Candidates were asked to demonstrate whether they have the competencies that Madison principals need to be successful. After making it through the screen process, candidates met with community panels to help determine the best fit for each school.

Pending board approval, all candidates will start on July 1, according to the release. The district also expects to announce additional hires by early June.
