Mineral Point wins WIAA baseball opener

Mineral Point opened the WIAA Division Three baseball tournament with a 12-2 win over New Glarus in five innings in Mineral Point Friday.

Mineral Point is seeded third, New Glarus sixth in the sectional.

After giving up two runs in the first inning, Mineral Point pitcher Tannler Ames settled down and shut out the Glarner Knights the rest of the day.

Alec Schmitz helped out at the plate with a run scoring single as the Pointers closed out the game with a seven-run fifth inning.

Mineral Point advances to the regional semifinal next Tuesday. The Pointers play the second seed in the sectional, at Cuba City at 4:30 pm.
