Rev. Tisha Brown

Rev. Tisha Brown didn’t do it for the song, but it is one of her favorite carols.

“It is something that I have claimed as being like, 'Yes, I'm Parson Brown! Why not?'” Brown said.

Brown said she grew up in the church, and her faith led her to seminary school in Sacramento. She eventually returned to the more “Winter Wonderland” climate of Wisconsin, and ten years ago became the pastor at Community of Hope. She said her dad was a member of the congregation while she did her undergraduate work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

“I do have a little bit of fun with that, to play with audiences a little bit and to kind of burst those stereotypes of what pastors look like and what pastors do," Brown said.

One of those things, Brown said, is singing.

It took Brown crossing a marathon finish line to give her the courage to belt out songs on the side.

“I remember thinking, 'If I can do this, I can do anything.' I mean, it was just really hard to run a marathon,” Brown said.

When she’s not giving sermons, Brown is performing with her jazz trio, Chance Allies.

“I think it's kind of a spiritual connection that's made between myself and the musicians and the people in the audience,” Brown said.

Far from a snowman you would build in some meadow, this Parson Brown hopes everyone has someone else to sing and celebrate with this holiday season.

“Whether the holidays is a time of real celebration for them or whether its a struggle to get through the rest of this year,” Brown said. "There might be a sense of accompaniment that people are not alone.”
