MADISON -

Martha E. Nelson, age 92, of Madison died on Sunday, May 26, 2013, at UW Hospital-Madison, with her daughter, Augie, and great-granddaughter, Chloe in attendance.

Martha was born April 23, 1921, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of William and Augusta (Albrecht) Gough. She left high school to work to help family. Martha received her GED in 1976.

During World War II she worked as a crane operator at a munitions plant in the Chicago area. Her lifelong passion was for art. She worked in multiple media; oils, acrylics, drawing, graphic design, machine and hand stitchery, and metal chairs. She was a very crafty lady. In later years, even though legally blind from macular degeneration, she managed to create handmade postcards to send to family and friends. I know they will miss her encouraging little messages.

Martha is survived by her daughter, Charlette "Augie" Spicer; granddaughter, Amanda Gilderson; great-granddaughter, Chloe; sister, Ethel Schiebold; brother, Lawrence Gough; and all her nieces and nephews from her two sisters, Ethel and Dorothy, and five brothers, William, John, Earl, Lawrence and George. She is also survived by her wonderful friends at Capitol China Painters' Club.

A memorial gathering will be celebrated at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison on Friday, June 21, 2013, from 5-7 p.m. with Amanda Gilderson officiating.

The service will be a "Celebration of Life," with various pieces of her art work on display. A second memorial service is being scheduled for July in Aurora, Ill.

Memorial contributions may be made in Martha’s name to "Combat Blindness."
