MADISON, Wis. -

Madison police are urging residents to report crimes as soon as they happen after a 22-year-old waited days to report a mugging, according to a release.

The 22-year-old reported being mugged around 1 a.m. on New Year ’s Day a couple days later, police said. He was walking home from a New Year’s party and was robbed in an alley near Monroe Street.

According to the release, he was between Regent Street and Oakland Avenue when he was mugged by two men who approached him from behind.

One of the robbers punched the man and the two robbers fled with his money, Madison police said.

The 22-year-old told police he did not know what to do after the attack so he ran to his apartment and went to bed, according to the release.

The two robbers are described as black men in their late 20s. One is described as being 6 feet 1 inches tall and was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt. The second robber is described as being 5 feet 10 inches tall and wearing dark jeans and a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt.

Madison police urge residents to call 911 immediately following a crime because the faster officers can get to scene, the better likelihood there is that a suspect or suspects might be apprehended.
