MADISON, Wis. -

A Madison man received 13 years in federal prison Monday for distributing crack cocaine to an undercover officer.

According to a U.S. Attorney’s Office statement, Damien Smith, 24, pleaded guilty to the charge in February. Smith began delivering heroin and crack cocaine to an undercover officer in 2012, at one point telling the officer his heroin was so good that people often overdosed on it.

Smith received a warning in November 2011 that his conduct would be under a microscope because of his record of violent crimes and repeat arrests. The warning, called a Notification, was issued to nine other offenders and is part of a crime prevention approach that promotes deterrence in repeat offenders, according to the statement. Four months later, Smith made five deliveries of heroin and one delivery of crack cocaine to the undercover officer.

Smith has seven prior felony convictions, according to the statement.

The Madison Police Department, the Dane County Narcotics and Gang Task Force, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives collaborated on the investigation against Smith.
