A 52-year-old man was rescued from the Rock River Tuesday night after voluntarily jumping into the water to try and avoid being arrested on an outstanding warrant, Janesville police said.

An officer stopped a vehicle on North Main Street at East Centerway Drive around 6:05 p.m., according to an alert. The driver of the vehicle, Bradley Bobzien, 52, fled from the traffic stop location and the officer chased him.

A minute later, Bobzien ran toward the Rock River and intentionally jumped into it near the Centerway Dam to avoid apprehension on an outstanding warrant, police said.

Several officers from the Janesville Police Department responded and used water rescue tools to try and get Bobzien out of the water, according to the alert. He floated south in the river and under the Milwaukee Street Bridge where it became apparent that he was in distress.

Officers eventually convinced Bobzien to hold a rescue role until Janesville Fire and Paramedic staff could get a recovery boat into the water, officials said. Crews were able to get Bobzien out of the water just south of the Milwaukee Street Bridge around 6:40 p.m.

Bobzien was transported to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center for treatment related to his time in the water, according to the alert. He was then arrested on tentative charges of resisting an officer, operating after revocation and on a department of corrections warrant for battery.
