MONROE, Wis. -

The man accused of killing a 10-year-old boy in an October drunken driving crash is pleading not guilty.

Trevor McGuire, 21, of Madison entered the plea in Green County court on Friday. He faces charges of homicide by reckless use of a vehicle, first-degree reckless homicide, injury by reckless use of a motor vehicle, first-degree reckless injury and first-degree recklessly endangering safety.

Michael Iverson, 10, of Stoughton, was killed in the Oct. 7 crash on Highway 59 west of Albany. His family was driving back to Stoughton after a volleyball tournament in Monroe.

According to the sheriff's department, McGuire was driving his pickup west on 59 when he crossed the center line and hit the eastbound minivan.

Witnesses later told deputies the truck passed two different vehicles at a high rate of speed before the crash. The pickup slid out of control while negotiating a curve faster than than the curve could be negotiated, according to deputies. The truck then entered the other lane of traffic.

The minivan was driven by Matthew Iverson, 35, of Stoughton, and it had three children inside. Iverson took evasive action but was struck despite driving onto the shoulder to avoid the collision, according to deputies.

Matthew Iverson was taken by helicopter to UW Hospital in Madison and later discharged. The other two children, ages 7 and 13, were taken by ambulance for minor injuries.

The sheriff's department said an investigation showed that McGuire had been drinking alcohol before the crash, and his blood alcohol level was "well over" the legal limit.

A criminal complaint states the passenger told deputies he and McGuire had been drinking vodka out of a flask at a warehouse in Albany where they were loading furniture to move to their new apartment.

Investigators said they found an opened container of tequila in the truck.
