MADISON, Wis. -

Part of Madison Water Utility’s 2014 operating budget will include a proposed 22 percent rate increase, according to a release.

The increase would go into effect in the second half of 2014, officials said. The current water rate is $2.81 per 1,000 gallons.

The rate increase would mean the average residential customer’s bill would go up by about $4.05 per month, according to the release. The increase must be approved by the Public Service Commission before it goes into effect.

Officials said even with the increase, the city’s water rate would be below the statewide average and within the affordability guidelines set by the Water Utility Board.

MWU is exploring the rate increase as part of a plan to renew and rebuild the city’s water infrastructure, according to the release. The plan would replace 400 miles of pipe over the next 40 years at a cost of more than $7.5 million per year.

This will be the first increase for MWU customers in more than three years, officials said.

The budget will be presented to the Water Utility Board Tuesday night.
