MADISON, Wis. -

Madison residents will now have an option for disposing of household batteries.

City officials said residents can drop off batteries at one of the city’s two full-service drop-off sites at 4602 Sycamore Ave. and 1501 W. Badger Rd., two Metcalfe's Market locations at 726 N. Midvale Drive and 7455 Mineral Point Road and the Williamson St. Co-op at 1221 Williamson Street.

Madison Recycling Coordinator George Dreckmann said recycling household batteries is expensive. He said it costs $1,300 per ton because there’s not a lot of recyclable material in them.

The program is funded through savings realized in the electronic recycling program. It’s been run as a test program for a year and a half.
