Madison School District to receive 15 percent less state funding than last year

MADISON, Wis. -

The Madison Metropolitan School District will receive 15.08 percent less state funding for the 2013-14 school year, according to the Department of Public Instruction.

The Department of Public Instruction released estimates of funding for school districts Monday.

According to the report, MMSD received $58,451,018 in 2012-13 and is estimated to receive $49,634,685 in funding for the 2013-14, more than $8.5 million less.

More than half of public school districts in Wisconsin will receive less general aid in the 2013-14 school year than they did for the 2012-13 school year, according to estimates.

General school aid is set to increase by 1.1 percent, or $4.341 billion, for 2013-14 compared to last school year, according to the release.

Actual aid payments are estimated at $4.2 billion because of statutory reductions for the Milwaukee voucher program and for independent charter schools in Milwaukee and Racine, according to the release.

The state has 424 school districts, and 54 percent, 229 districts, will receive less general aid in 2013-14, while 45 percent, 193 districts, are expected to receive more aid.

District aid estimates can be found here.
