MADISON, Wis. -

There’s a new gadget making the world do a double-take and we’re starting to see more people using them in Madison.

Recently, Google hosted a contest called "If I had glass," where people had to say what they'd do if they owned a pair.

About 8,000 people in the nation were picked, including Madison resident Jeffrey Powers, of geekazine.com. Powers has been playing around with Google Glass for about a month now.

Google Glass is a highly-coveted computer that you wear and some people swear it will change the way we communicate.

“You can do a lot of things and once again, it is hands free,” said Powers. “So, I could be walking the arboretum, walking around, taking a video.”

“With Google Glass, I’ve got Jeff back,” said Jeff’s girlfriend Jennifer. “He can still check things if he wants to but it’s a lot faster. It’s a lot more discreet and it’s easier to feel like I have that connection with him.”

Google Glass is basically a computer you wear. Only a few thousand people in the U.S. are selected beta-testers. And though it’s a novelty, it’s certainly not a toy.

“Part of it is making money,” said Powers. “Glass is going to be a part of a surgeon’s lifestyle. Glass might become part of an airline pilot’s lifestyle.”

Most beta-testers had to pay $1,500 for a pair plus they had to fly to LA, San Francisco or New York to get them. It’s Google’s hope to sell them to consumers by the end of the year for about half that.
