LA CROSSE, Wis. -

La Crosse police are asking for the public's help finding a Madison man who tried to kill his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend in La Crosse early Sunday morning.

Thomas Beitlich, 31, of Madison, faces attempted first-degree intentional homicide and use of a dangerous weapon charges. He is wanted on a $250,000 cash bond warrant.

When La Crosse police arrived to 1502 Ferry Street at about 2:50 a.m. Sunday, they found 33-year-old Terrance Callahan in a pool of blood. Callahan’s girlfriend Amanda Eklov told police she woke up to Beitlich standing over Callahan yelling and saw lots of blood. Eklov said Beitlich had broken into her house. Police noticed the back door was kicked open and damaged.

Eklov saw something in Beitlich’s hands, but couldn’t tell what it was. Police say Callahan had about 15 to 20 cuts on his head. Beitlich dragged Callahan into the living room and hit him again, the criminal complaint states. Eklov yelled for him to stop. Then he left the house. She told police Beitlich appeared drunk and crazy that night.

Callahan was bleeding profusely, gasping for breath and had a weak pulse, the complaint states. His skull appeared fractured and he had cuts to his scalp and around his eye sockets. A doctor told police if Callahan survives, he will have serious brain injuries.  He is currently in critical condition at a local hospital.

Police says Beitlich has ties to the Vernon County area and is believed to still be in the La Crosse area region. He is described as a white male, who is 6-feet tall and has blue eyes and brown hair. His Madison address on file is 311 N. Hancock St. #134.

Eklov said her two-year relationship with Beitlich ended about two months ago, the police report states. Beitlich fled after the incident.
