Madison launches recycling competition

Published On: Apr 26 2013 03:28:51 PM CDT

Madison households can now compete with each other to cut out waste.

City officials are launching a program that pits house against house in an attempt to cut waste and promote recycling, according to a Madison statement.

“We've done studies that show there is a significant amount of recyclables still in the trash,” Madison Recycling Coordinator George Dreckmann said. “Even though Madison has an outstanding recycling program, we can do a better job.”

The Reduce Your Waste Stream Challenge will ask participants to measure their garbage and recycling weekly over the course of a month. Weekly weigh-ins will take place, and results will be posted on the challenge’s website. City officials will award prizes to winners, including gift certificates from the Concourse Hotel, the Plaza Tavern and Union Cab.

The challenge is seeing its debut in Madison after several successful years in Waukesha County, where participants reduced their waste by 49 percent, according to the statement.
