DAYTONA BEACH, FL -

Matt Kenseth nipped Kevin Harvick and Kasey Kahne at the finish line to win the first of two Daytona 500 qualifying races.

Cole Whitt and Alex Bowman both raced their way into the 43-driver field via the available transfer spots on Thursday night. Whitt and Bowman are both rookies.

Kenseth will start on the inside of the second row in Sunday's Daytona 500.

Denny Hamlin edged Jeff Gordon and Kurt Busch in the second Budweiser Duel.

A crash on the final lap of the second qualifying race claimed defending Sprint Cup Champion Jimmy Johnson who was running in the top five.  Johnson will start on the outside of row 16 in Sunday's 500 mile race.

Austin Dillon and Martin Truex, Jr. won spots on the front row in pole qualifying on Sunday.
