Keep up pressure on redistricting

Of all the items on our editorial agenda for 2013 which we are reviewing this week, this one is – after nine months – perhaps the most interesting of all.
This issue is all about redistricting reform. We called it "Our Government" to make the point that effective democracy has been hijacked by politicians more interested in keeping their jobs, their power and their money than in serving the citizens – all the citizens – of their districts.
By redrawing their own districts every ten years they’ve eliminated competitive elections. They chose their voters; we do not choose our elected officials. It’s a broken system.
There are systems that work, Iowa and California being two examples. But our lawmakers have refused to even schedule hearings on a bill to adopt a similar system.
But in the last few months editorial pages around the state have come together to call for hearings and expose the hypocrisy of the lawmakers who resist.
Pressure is building. So is momentum. We think eventually the people will win this one.
