Jean K. Smith

Jean Kathryn Smith, 83, joyously joined her husband, parents and all siblings in Heaven this Christmas Eve. She passed away at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, with her family by her side. Jean Kathryn Sexe was born August 13, 1930, in Blair, WI, the daughter of Carl and Gladys Sexe. Jean was the valedictorian of her class at Blair High School, where she was a member of the debate team. She attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, and received her college degree from UW-Milwaukee. She was united in marriage to Glen Smith on June 21, 1953. Together they enjoyed 54 years of love and friendship. Jean worked as a kindergarten teacher in Shorewood and as a social worker in Waukesha County. They lived in Brookfield, WI, for 25 years while raising their family. After retiring, Jean and Glen spent many winters in Green Valley, AZ, and spent time living in Oconomowoc, and Delavan, before moving in with their daughter in Edgerton, in 2003 and Janesville, in 2005. Glen passed away in August, 2007. Jean loved reading, bible study, bird watching, golf, gardening, exercising and spending time with her family. She traveled to Norway, and was very proud of her Norwegian heritage. She was a devoted member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Janesville.

Jean was a devoted wife and mother. She is survived by her four children: Jennifer (Dan) White of Janesville, Karyn (Stuart) Cable of Watertown, Susan Ballard of Watertown, and Steve Smith of Green Bay; seven grandchildren: Andy and Tommy White of Janesville, Austin, Sam and Libby Cable of Watertown, and Allison and Bobby Ballard of Trabuco Canyon, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Gladys; and her four siblings: Sonja, Bob, Leona and Carrol.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at GOOD SHEPHERD LUTHERAN CHURCH, 700 N. Wright Road, Janesville, WI 53546. Pastor Steve Ekblad will be officiating.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to the wonderful, small church that strengthened her faith, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church – Jean Smith Memorial Fund.
