JANESVILLE, Wis. -

Janesville is one of about 20 different cities bidding for an opportunity to bring more jobs, thanks to a planned expansion of Seneca Foods.

Janesville Interm City Manager Jay Winzenz, said the the expansion would allow them to add an 80,000 square-foot addition to the current facility. That addition would house at least new food processing line and create 25 new jobs.

The company already has a more than 1 million square-foot facility on the city's south side.

Winzenz said the expansion would mean the company would need a place to dispose of their waste water.

Janesville is offering to build a pre-treatment lagoon for the company. But it would cost more than $3 million, something the city hopes will pay off down the road.

"The facility that will receive the waste water from Seneca," Winzenz said. "We're also designing it to be able to receive waste water from other future food processing facilities that could locate in this area."

John Beckord, president of Forward Janesville said Rock County's access to freeways, water and agriculture make it is an attractive location for food companies. He said Janesville's project won't take business away from Beloit's food processing industry.

"We're so close and integrated that having Kerry and Hormel and the variety of food processors in the area creates a cluster that's helpful to both communities."
