Inland fishing season starts

CABLE, Wis. -

The conditions for the start of Wisconsin's inland fishing season are polar opposite of last year in some areas.

There is still up to 20 inches of ice on some northern lakes, with better conditions in southern Wisconsin.

Some events associated with the annual Governor's Fishing Opener still went on Saturday in Bayfield County on Lake Namekagon. Gov. Scott Walker delayed his fishing outing there to wait for safer conditions.

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources spokesman Kevin Harter said some anglers still fished Lake Namekagon's open water near shore and the thawed river outlet. He said some even chose to ice fish.

He said conditions were much different last year, with the ice melting by March.

Then-Gov. Warren Knowles started the event in 1965.
