RANDOM LAKE, Wis. -

Authorities are investigating the theft of more than 500 iPads and other tablet computers from the Random Lake School District.

The Sheboygan County sheriff's office said the items are valued at about $180,000.

According to a news release from the sheriff's office Tuesday, the investigation indicates a school district employee was involved in the theft over a period of time.
The school district reported the theft last week.

District officials said the stolen items were used by students and included new and used equipment. The school district's insurance company has authorized the district to buy replacements.

Superintendent Tom Malmstadt told Sheboygan Press Media the district is cooperating with the sheriff's office.
