Just like humans, dogs need vaccines too. It’s important to know what types of vaccines your dog needs and how often he needs them.

The type of vaccines needed depends on each dog – including age, medical history, environment and travel habits. According to The American Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), most vets recommend dogs get the core vaccines.

The core vaccines are considered to be vital to all dogs. These include parvovirus, distemper, canine hepatitis and rabies.

Other vaccines, including the non-core vaccines – are given to dogs based on their exposure and risk, the ASPCA says. Some of the non-core vaccines include Bordetella bronchiseptica, Borrelia burgdorferi and Leptospira bacteria.

How often your dog gets vaccinated varies from dog to dog. Typically your dog’s veterinarian will determine which vaccine schedule is best for your dog. Some vaccines may be given annually but others may be given only once every three years, or even longer, according to the ASPCA.
