The holiday season, full of feelings of peace and joy for many, is also a reminder of difficulties for many others. It is the season of giving and its right that we make helping others part of the spirit of the season. With that in mind we want to offer our gratitude and appreciation for some big steps this past year to help people with mental health and disability challenges. And Governor Walker gets a great deal of credit for both.

Early in the year Walker announced a $30 million mental health initiative that included expanded services that consumers and advocates have longed called for. Not only did the legislature agree, but Assembly leadership created a task force on mental health that also produced important new access to mental health care. We understand those questioning some of the motivation for the moves. But after years and years of inaction on mental health issues this year’s success are very welcome.

Then, earlier this month, the Governor signed a worker training law for people with disabilities. By leveraging federal funds as many as 23-thousand jobseekers with disabilities will get employment services and counseling over the next two years. In the spirit of the season we celebrate these responsible and responsive policies.
