Hazel Green police chief resigns

Published On: Sep 27 2013 01:51:24 PM CDT

The Hazel Green chief of police has resigned following a recent leave of absence.

Brian Klein signed a resignation agreement after it was unanimously approved by the Hazel Green Village Board Thursday night.

The resignation is effective Monday.

Under the agreement, Klein will continue to be paid by the village through the end of the year. He will also be paid for unused vacation time, and if he files for unemployment benefits it won’t be contested by the village.

The resignation agreement will also not be placed in Klein’s personnel file with the village, but both Klein and the village acknowledge that it is a public record. In addition, the agreement is not an admission by either party that one did something wrong toward the other.

Village Attorney Eileen Brownlee wouldn’t say why Klein had recently taken a leave of absence. She said the duties of the chief were being handled within the department.

Hazel Green has another full-time officer and one part-time officer.
