Guthrie throws 4-hitter, Royals top White Sox 2-0

Published On: May 04 2013 11:19:15 PM CDT

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -

Jeremy Guthrie provided the Royals, after two days of rainouts, with a game worth waiting for Saturday night by pitching the first shutout of his career in a 2-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox at Kauffman Stadium.

Guthrie’s first move, when his gem was official, was to point to catcher Salvy Perez and clap his hand to his glove in appreciation.

It was a marvelous effort: a four-hitter with three strikeouts and one walk that enabled Guthrie, 4-0, to extend two impressive streaks: Guthrie now has a club-record run of 17 consecutive starts without a loss; and he has now yielded just two earned runs in 44 ? innings over six starts against the White Sox since joining the Royals.

The Royals had some early chances against Chicago starter Dylan Axelrod but settled for Lorenzo Cain’s two-run, two-out triple in the first inning. It was enough.

Axelrod, 0-2, lasted until Perez’s two-out single in the eighth inning despite not recording a strikeout. He allowed eight hits, one walk, and those two first-inning runs.

Guthrie breezed through the first seven innings on 77 pitches and retired Alexei Ramirez to start the eighth before Tyler Flowers grounded a single through the left side.

Third baseman Mike Moustakas grabbed Dewayne Wise’s foul pop on a nice play at the railing before Alejandro De Aza punched a single to left that moved Flowers to second. That brought manager Ned Yost to the mound for a quick chat before choosing to stick with Guthrie, who ended the inning by getting Jeff Keppinger to ground into a force at second.

Yost stuck with Guthrie to start the ninth inning, which brought cheers from the crowd of 19,957 when he sprinted, as usual, from the dugout to the mound. Guthrie rolled through a one-two-three ninth inning, which enabled the Royals, 16-10, to win their third straight game.
