Gophers drop Badgers in Big Ten opener
Minnesota's Mike and Connor Reilly both scored goals as the Gophers defeated the Wisconsin Badger men's hockey team 4-1 in the first game played in the new Big Ten conference Friday.
The Badgers took a 1-0 lead at the 6:31 mark of the first period on a goal by Joseph LaBate, but that would be the end of the scoring on the day for Wisconsin.
Mike Reilly scored a power play goal to even the score, then Seth Ambroz beat Badger goalie Landon Peterson to give Minnesota a 2-1 lead late in the first period.
It stayed that way until the third period when Connor Reilly scored at 10:46, then Ambroz scored his second goal of the game into an empty net with 1:34 left and Minnesota locked up the win.
Minnesota (12-2-1 overall) outshot Wisconsin (4-4-1 overall) 45-25 in the game.
The Badgers and Gophers wrap up their series Saturday with a 5 pm faceoff at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis.
