Gertrude "Sissy" E. Mulcahy

MADISON – Gertrude E. “Sissy” Mulcahy, age 83, passed away Friday, May 17, 2013, at Agrace HospiceCare surrounded by her loving children.

Gert was born on March 27, 1930 in Dane, Wisconsin. To Thomas and Mary (Koehler) Midthun. Sissy attended school in Dane and married George Mulcahy on September 10, 1946. Her early rural farm life was spent raising her six children and nurturing her family and friends through many occasions, happy and sad. Sissy was a humble and positive woman. She always found goodness in all her relationships.

She spent 38 years at Mendota Mental Health Institute (MMHI), which included caring for adolescents. Gert’s love and commitment was recognized when she was honored as the first MMHI Employee of the Year in 1984.

Sissy enjoyed her retirement years including winters spent in Florida; spring, summer and fall included breakfasts with family, friends and nephews. She had a loving and spirited relationship with her grandchildren, who loved her rhymes, positive outlook and her great sense of humor.

Gert is survived by her 5 children: Georgia (Dennis) Mulcahy-Deppisch, Sharon (Michael) Rounds, Diane Swanson, all of Madison, Dennis (Rose) Mulcahy of Brodhead and Carrie (John) Mathews of Oregon; 10 grandchildren, Andy, Ashley, Austin, Catherine, Chad, Cheryl, Cody, Judd, Katie and Scott; and two sisters, Marion Nordness of DeForest and Phylis Bradley of Arlington.

Gert was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Mulcahy in 2001; her sisters, Ann Moran and Carrie Mulcahy; her brothers, Oliver, Eldon, Ferdy, Thomas and Gerald; and two children (an infant and her daughter, Kathy).

A celebration of life service will be held at 11AM on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at LAKEVIEW LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4001 Mandrake Road, Madison, with the Rev. Dean Kirst officiating.

Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 pm to 7 pm on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 2418 N. Sherman Avenue and again on Wednesday at the church from 10 am until the time of the service.
