Furloughs to begin next week at Fort McCoy

A western Wisconsin military base is set to begin furloughs next week to absorb federal spending cuts.
Fort McCoy plans to furlough most of its 1,500 civilian employees one day per week beginning Monday and running through the end of September, when the federal fiscal year ends.
The fort's commissary, which is already closed on Mondays, will close on Tuesdays as well beginning next week and running through Sept. 30.
The furloughs are part of the fort's effort to absorb $85 billion in automatic cuts nationwide, known as a sequester, that resulted from Congress' failure to trim the deficit by $1.2 trillion over a decade. About half the cuts affect military spending.
Fort McCoy lies between Tomah and Sparta.
