Full tours start at Wright estate May 1

SPRING GREEN, Wis. -

The full tour season starts this week at Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin in south central Wisconsin.

Officials say the most dramatic preservation work visitors will see this season involves the landscape.

Workers removed walnut trees near the main drive to eventually plant an apple orchard. They've also restored the prairie land on Welsh Hill and removed trees to restore historic views of the windmill tower.

There have also been structural repairs to the guest wing under the main level, but project manager Ryan Hewson says guests won't really notice the work.

Wright used the 600-acre property in Spring Green as a laboratory of sorts, changing and expanding it until he died in 1959.

Tours had started on weekends but will expand to every day starting Wednesday.
