MONROE, Wis. -

A woman accused of stealing more than $800,000 from New Glarus Home faced prosecutors Wednesday at a preliminary hearing.

Joyce Ziehli’s attorney had asked the judge to dismiss five of the six felony charges she is facing, arguing that financial ledgers from New Glarus Home have not been turned over to the defense in violation of a court order.

The judge denied the request and went ahead with the preliminary hearing.

Ziehli, a secretary at New Glarus Home for 31 years, is accused of stealing the money over a 10-year period. In court, the former executive director of New Glarus Home, Roger Goepfert, detailed how the funds were taken.

She allegedly wrote a series of checks to herself from the New Glarus Home account. Goepfert said Ziehli used a stamp of his signature to cash checks for thousands of dollars.

He confronted Ziehli about the missing money in January.

“She didn’t indicate specifically a reason for these numbers,” Goepfert said. “She just was very highly emotionally upset, asking that she not be terminated.”

Ziehli was fired that day and a criminal investigation was launched.

Ziehli’s attorney told the court she is innocent of the charges and money that was taken was returned. She will be back in court June 25 for a continuation of her preliminary hearing.
