DANE, Wis. -

An operator of the Merrimac Ferry played a role in catching a burglary suspect sought by deputies, according to a release from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to Dane Electric on West Main Street in the village of Dane at 1:50 a.m. on Wednesday for a report of a burglary in progress.

The burglars fled with four guns power tools, but an alert neighbor took a photo of their car, according to deputies. Deputies gathered more information on the car and aired a description of the suspect vehicle.

The Merrimac Ferry operator was listening to a police scanner and recognized the vehicle as one of the cars on the ferry. Deputies said he contacted authorities and delayed the ferry’s arrival until Sauk County deputies were waiting on shore.

Deputies said they searched the car driven by Lucas Wille, 28, of Merrimac, and found some of the stolen property.

Collin Schubert, 23, was arrested as he left his home on South Street in the village of Dane. Deputies said Schubert was armed with a handgun reported stolen in the burglary. Deputies said they found additional items from the burglary in his home.

Both were arrested on suspicion of burglary while armed.
