Fast-food workers protest in Milwaukee

Published On: May 15 2013 07:53:12 PM CDT
MADISON, Wis. -

Fast-food and retail workers are holding a one-day protest in Milwaukee to demand higher wages and better working conditions.

Wednesday's protest in Milwaukee is the latest in a string of fast-food job actions across the country. In recent weeks, protests have occurred in St. Louis, Chicago, Detroit and New York City.

Organizers planned protests at fast-food outlets and small retail stores around Milwaukee. Organizers say in some cases, workers were walking off the job. In most cases, workers did not show up for work in protest.

Scott DeFife, a representative for the National Restaurant Association told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the organizing campaigns in Milwaukee and other cities are targeting an industry that "has not been heavily unionized."

Community leaders are expected to accompany workers back to work Thursday.
