Evjue's Legacy Grows

The Wisconsin Broadcasters Association this week is inducting the late William T. Evjue to its Hall of Fame; a recognition of the founder of the Capital Times’s often overlooked contribution to the broadcast industry in Wisconsin. Among other things Evjue started the first commercially successful radio station here in Madison, WIBA, in 1925. The WBA tribute is certainly well deserved.

But we were reminded again last week of the scope of Evjue’s legacy with the annual distribution of the proceeds from the Foundation he established before he died in 1970, gifts to the community and the university that have totaled more that $49 Million over the last 43 years. Gifts this year like $50,000 for the new Domestic Abuse Intervention Services shelter, $40,000 for services for autistic children at the Waisman Center and the final installment of a $500,000 contribution to the Madison Children’s museum are examples of the scope of Evjue’s wish that his share of proceeds from stock in the newspaper be given back to the community. Seventy-four area non-profits and 17 UW programs and projects were approved for gifts this year. We think Evjue would be proud of the impact he has still on this city and this state.
