Encouraging signs in test scores
The latest statewide test results were, on their face, pretty dismal. There are not enough Wisconsin students who are proficient in math and reading.
That does not bode well for the workforce of the future in this state.
Look a little deeper and there are encouraging signs to be found. The bar has been raised. Students are being held to a higher standard, and that’s a good thing.
Measurements of achievement are getting more sophisticated, and as a result comparing scores from year to year will become more meaningful.
In Madison, encouragement was to be found in new Superintendent Jen Cheatham’s public commitment to ensuring every student is college and career ready. That commitment was reinforced by the community leaders, public officials, school board members and educators who stood behind Cheatham as she outlined next steps.
We all need to be ready to stand behind her if we’re going to get this job done.
