JANESVILLE, Wis. -

The Rock County Historical Society is hosting the 2014 History Summer Camp for 30 junior historians this week, according to a release.

In partnership with the Janesville School District, the city of Janesville and Beloit College, the camp, which will run daily from 8-11:30 a.m., will primarily take place on the campus of RCHS in Janesville, organizers said.

“Our History Summer Camp provides children with a great opportunity to learn about history, archeology, architecture, genealogy, and so much more,” Executive Director of RCHS Mike Reuter said in the release. “The combination of providing lessons and hands-on learning experiences for our student participants enhances the overall benefits of the program for all involved.”

Each day of the camp will have a primary theme, with lessons provided by educators and RCHS staff, organizers said. Students will also have an opportunity to use the Charles Tallman Archives and Research Center at RSCHS to conduct their own family tree research.

The camp will end with student presentations highlighting what they have learned throughout the week, according to the release.

“We have built upon the success of last year’s history summer camp, and have created an interactive learning experience that highlights the history, architecture and people that make Rock County a great place to live,” Reuter said. “As students learn to appreciate the past, we can help guide them toward a better future.”
