Schultz looks to change voucher school deal

MADISON, Wis. -

The private school voucher expansion deal may run into some problems among Republicans in the state Senate.

Republican Sen. Dale Schultz said Thursday he knows of many of his colleagues who have concerns about the deal struck between Gov. Scott Walker and legislative leaders.

Schultz said he hopes there is room for improvement in the plan that allows vouchers in any public school in Wisconsin. They are currently allowed only in Milwaukee and Racine.

Schultz called the deal a "dangerous path" that will lead to a parallel school district funding system in Wisconsin.

The deal caps enrollment after next year statewide at 1,000 students, but Schultz says supporters will do all they can to loosen that in future years.

Walker spoke in support of the deal Thursday on WTMJ-AM Radio.
