Poll: 2/3 of Wis. voters back more school funding

Published On: May 14 2013 03:33:46 PM CDT

MILWAUKEE -

A new Marquette University law school poll says two-thirds of Wisconsin voters favor increasing funding for public schools.

The poll released Tuesday found 67 percent support boosting funding by 1.5 percent or more, while 22 percent would hold it steady. Seven percent prefer a decrease.

Extra money for schools can be used either to reduce property taxes, which 49 percent support, or increase school spending, which 46 percent favor.

Gov. Scott Walker has said he would be willing to spend more money on schools given recent revenue estimates showing the state will collect $500 million more than originally thought. Many lawmakers, including Republicans, are calling on Walker to let school spending increase.

The poll questioned 717 respondents. The margin of error is plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.
