MADISON, Wis. -

Many students and staff at Madison Memorial High School wore green and white Wednesday in honor of their former principal, Bruce Dahmen.

Dahmen died Tuesday after having a heart attack while visiting former Memorial student and basketball player Jeronne Maymon. Dahmen was in Tennessee watching Maymon play basketball for the Tennessee Volunteers.

In the letter, the district called Dahmen "a tremendous leader in this community who touched all of our lives, and this is an incredible loss for our community."

Dahmen has been a part of Memorial High School for 40 years. He started teaching a marketing class at the school in 1974, and in 2005 he became the principal.

“We’re going to be sad for a few days, but then we’re going to look back and we’re going to celebrate Bruce’s life, and Memorial is a better place because of Bruce Dahmen,” said Gary Kolpin, a retired Memorial athletic director.

Late last night, when word began to spread through the community of Dahmen’s death, friends went to Memorial High School. They painted the Rock on Memorial, a large rock that sits in front of the school, in Dahmen’s honor.

Superintendent Jennifer Cheatham released a statement calling Dahman an incredible leader and expert principal.

"He led Memorial High School with skill and integrity, and he touched the lives of countless students, staff and families. This is a tremendous loss for our community," she said.

Memorial High School students have plans to honor Dahmen at the school's home basketball game on Saturday. During the game, students will remain silent for the first 10 points Memorial scores in the game.
