Madison school board finalizes budget

Published On: Oct 30 2012 09:08:56 PM CDT

MADISON, Wis. -

The Madison Metropolitan School District Board of Education finalized its 2012-2013 budget, and the final impact on residents' property tax bills is significantly less than the preliminary budget forecast.

The proposed budget indicated a 3 percent hike on the school portion of residents' tax bill. But after an increase in state aid, due in part to 4-year-old kindergarten numbers, the average home will only see school taxes go up about $8, or 1.75 percent.

"The board has been thoughtful and looking at a balance between responding to our community members by reducing what would have been the expected property tax levy and balancing that with really looking at our achievement gap needs," said Jane Belmore, interim superintendent for the Madison Metropolitan School District.

Belmore also said responsible one-time expenditures this year will add flexibility to next year's budget.

MADISON, Wis.--A west Madison store is part of an effort to collect hundreds of stuffed animals to donate to six police departments in Southern Wisconsin.

Todd Merryfield, owner of The Learning Shop at 714 S. Gammon Road, said the store is collecting the bears for officers who use them to help comfort children with whom police come in contact.

"This is a great way to support what (police) do," Merryfield said. "Those are the kids that need something like this to reassure them, calm them down, and let them know that things are all right."

Nearly 500 plush animals were donated Tuesday, a Learning Shop spokeswoman said. The Madison store's effort is part of a larger initiative through the Bears for Humanity organization.
